2000-watt society

The 2000-watt society is a concept first mooted at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH Zurich) in 1998. The 2000-watt society foresees all energy consumption rates per person, including embodied energy, maintaining a ceiling of 2,000 watts, by 2050, without lowering the standard of living. Switzerland had this level in the 1960s.

Currently western European countires consume of the order of 6,000 watts of primary energy per person. The USA figure is double this, at 12,000 watts. China and India, on the other hand, have energy consumption levels below 2,000 watts, at 1,500 and 1,000 respectively.
